Do it yourself surgery
Monday, April 30, 2007 at 10:51PM Project Gutenberg is to a bibliophiles what My Space is to a hormonally-charged Red Bull infused teen. Nirvana. Free downloadable books. What could be wrong? Well, the #1 downloaded book is Manual of Surgery by Alexander Miles and Alexis Thompson. I have a slight problem with the book. It was published in 1912. Woodrow Wilson was duking it out with Teddy "Bull Moose" Roosevelt for the Oval Office. Let me see what else what happening in '12? Oh, Iceberg 1. Titanic 0.
Okay, but why is half America downloading this dusty tomb? Is this an HMO training manual? A refresher course for doctors who graduated from The Granada U Med School? Or is the high cost of medical care forcing people do their own surgery. Hey, my mother cut my hair, why not an appendectomy? Maybe a tummy tuck?
Or could it be the horrific pictures -- "Saw" meets ER. This poor guy is Doctor Scholl's worst nightmare. He must of have been bathing in a vat of lime. Or a Cabernet Sauvignon grape stomping adventure gone really bad. Anyway, if you are in dire need of instant surgery, don a mask and gown and make your way to Project Gutenberg. Warning: Type carefully, or you could end up with Steve Guttenberg -- that actor who made Police Academy 1 and 2 Oscar contenders.
